Day 4 - Locorotondo

Today we decided to go visit Locorotondo.  That's the town just near where we're staying, so no need for an early start.  Had time to sit around the trullo this morning and have a nice leisurely breakfast.

When we arrived in town, which is built on the top of a hill like many of the towns in Italy, the view of the valley was spectacular.

Check out the trulli in the upper right of the photo.  You see pockets of these all over Puglia.

Then we came into the historic old town (after I posed for my selfie, of course), and it was right around noon.  So all the church bells started ringing at the same time.  I took this photo with sound, but the sound didn't seem to transfer to the blog.  So imagine about 4 churches in close proximity all ringing the Angelus at the same time.

OK, so that's the Google "enhanced" version but I did take the picture.

Now to go find the churches - not a problem.  The concentration of churches in such a small area is impressive.

There are small churches...

...and large churches...

...and churches with beautiful roses adorning the altar.

The town is made up of a maze of winding roads, all bounded by old white buildings, very well maintained. Strolling down the pathways was so peaceful.  There were almost no tourists - except us of course.

The locals make sure that they decorate their homes with colourful flowers, to break up the white monotony.

Nothing monotonous about it.  Every time you turn a corner, you see some new little splash of colour.

Those are chilli peppers growing in little coloured pots attached to the wall of a restaurant.

Speaking of restaurants, after wandering around for a bit, we stopped for a lovely lunch with a bottle of the local white wine.  Very good and much appreciated.

The view on the way out...

Ciao Locorotondo.  We'll be back.

In fact, we're going back tonight. We'll be going back for dinner and might catch a bit of the Germany - Brazil game which will be playing in the main Piazza in town starting at 10:00 PM local time.  Too bad Italy is not still in it... but should be fun anyway.
